Setting Intentions: The WeShape Way to Lasting Change

Monday, May 5, 2025

At WeShape, we believe that the path to consistent, meaningful movement starts with something deeper than motivation—it starts with intention.

Most fitness journeys begin with a goal: “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to look better for summer.” But when we dig deeper, we often discover that these surface-level goals are connected to something much more personal and profound.

Why Intention Matters More Than Motivation

When we operate from a place of punishment—because we ate too much, or because we don’t like how we look—it’s nearly impossible to sustain consistency. That mindset burns us out, injures us, or leads us into the same cycle of quitting and starting over.

But when we set an intention that’s rooted in self-respect, love, and care, everything changes.

Instead of thinking, “I have to work out,” the shift becomes, “I get to move my body because I value myself. Because I want to feel good for as long as possible.”

The Power of Asking “Why?”

Intentions guide actions, and actions shape outcomes. If your intention is misaligned, the steps you take likely won’t lead to where you truly want to go. That’s why we challenge our community to go beyond the first “why.”

We don’t stop at “I want to do a one-legged squat.” We keep digging:

• Why do you want to do that?

• Why does that matter to you?

• What will it give you?

One example is from an old client of Coach Tyler’s who was asked about her “why,” she begin with a more surface level answer that had to do with looking a certain way, then deepened to a physical goal of doing a specific movement, then eventually uncovered a powerful truth: she wanted to run again—not just for fitness, but because it reminded her of running marathons with her dad. That emotional connection became the real fuel behind her effort.

Your Meaning, Your “Why”

This week, we invite you to do the same. Find a quiet space. Take 15–20 minutes just for you. Ask yourself:

“What is my ‘why’?”

Then ask again.

And again.

Until something meaningful rises to the surface—something that stirs your heart and connects to who you are.

Let it be real. Let it be yours. Whether your first answer is, “I want to lose 20 pounds,” or “I want to feel like myself again,” you’re not wrong. But don’t stop there. Keep asking until your reason feels inspiring.

Write It. See It. Live It.

Once you discover your intention, write it down. Put it where you’ll see it often—on your mirror, your desk, in your car. Let it be the daily reminder that you’re not just working toward a goal. You’re showing up for yourself.

This isn’t about a summer body.

This is about long-term change.

This is about learning to care about you—your body, your health, and your joy.

And that journey? It starts with intention.
